Sister Mary Walter Sokolic, 84, of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, at the convent.. Born July 20, 1931, in St. Louis, Missouri, she was the daughter of Mary (Zorich) and Walter Sokolic.. Sister Mary Walter entered the convent in 1954 and made her final vows in 1960. She would teach and serve as principal for over 40 years at nine schools: Our Lady of Perpetual Help, New Albany; St. Joseph's, Princeton; St. Louis, Batesville; St. Anthony's, Dayton, Ohio; St. Aloysius, Our Lady of Victory, Seton High, Roger Bacon High and St. Clements, Cincinnati.. Sister Mary Walter became familiar with the Franciscan Sisters in St. Louis, where she was an elementary teacher at Holy Cross School. After three years of working with the Franciscans, she decided to join the order, taking her religious name of Sister Mary Walter to honor her parents.. In 1999 she retired to the Motherhouse, Oldenburg, where she enjoyed following the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds.. She is survived by her sisters, Betty Ann Brautigam and Rosalie Spolyarie, and several nieces and nephews.. She was preceded in death by her parents.. Visitation is Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 1-3 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Pat McCloskey, OFM, officiating. Burial will be in the convent cemetery.
