Marie's Story

Marie A. Hardebeck, 88, Westport, passed away at 7:27 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2016, at Morning Breeze Retirement Community Health Care Center, Greensburg.
She was born Sept. 21, 1927, in Franklin County, the daughter of Adam John and Mabel D. (Wolljung) Schantz. She was raised in the St. Peters area and has been a Westport area resident since 1950. Marie was a member of the former St. Denis Catholic Church and a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Millhousen. She enjoyed crocheting, bird watching and her dog Peggy.
She married Elmer A. Hardebeck in Franklin County Feb. 15, 1950, and he preceded her in death Aug. 13, 2004.
Other survivors include her daughters, Helen (John) Owens, North Vernon, Patricia (Charles) Manlief and Karen Hardebeck, Westport, and Dorothy Hardebeck, Greensburg; her sons, John Hardebeck, Robert (Alice) Hardebeck and James Hardebeck, Westport; her sisters, Ruth Haring, Cincinnati, Ohio, Edith Fledderman, Batesville, Francis Werner, Napoleon, and Juliana Vonderheide, Brookville; her brother, Walter Schantz, Batesville; and her eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; her daughter-in-law, Mitzi Hardebeck; her sister, Esther Godard; and her brothers, Russell and Leo Schantz.
The funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Millhousen, with Father Bill Turner officiating. Burial will follow at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery, Millhousen. The family will receive visitors Thursday, April 28, from 4-8 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 3:30 p.m. at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home, Westport. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department.
