Lucylle's Story

Text size

Lucylle M. Placke, 91, Batesville, passed away, surrounded by her children, early Thursday morning, Nov. 5, 2015, at St. Andrews Health Campus.. The daughter of Charles and Adeline Gibson was born Nov. 2, 1924, in Batesville. She married Richard L. Placke Nov. 29, 1941, and he preceded her in death Jan. 15, 2002.. They lived on the Placke family farm for over 60 years. It was the gathering place for the family for all the holidays and special family events.. Lucylle was a homemaker, making her husband and children her first priority. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Huntersville. Throughout the years, she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, sang in the chancel choir and was a member of Loyal Workers and the Women’s Guild. The strong friendships forged through church carried over into lifelong family friendships – both parents and children. One of Lucylle’s fond memories was the summer family get-togethers and picnics.. For over 15 years she worked in the high school and middle school cafeteria. The kids all called her “Grandma” as they came through the line, and she always had a smile and a sunny comment for each. She enjoyed playing cards monthly with her special neighborhood friends for over 50 years.. Music was a great love of hers. She played piano for over two decades for the opening of St. John’s Sunday school and instilled a love of music and singing in her children. All of her children played instruments and she encouraged them to continue into adulthood.. Lucylle’s quick wit and ready comeback comments kept a conversation lively and filled with humor. Her children and grandchildren will miss her warm strength that she shared with each of them – sometimes shared over making potato salad, or when she was helping them with lessons, or just listening to what happened during their day.. Lucylle will be dearly missed by sons Daniel Placke, Indianapolis, Richard C. (Kathy) Placke, Batesville, Steve Placke, Sulfur, Kentucky, and Paul (Lynn) Placke, Goshen, Kentucky; daughters Diane (Roger) Dierckman, Dublin, Ohio, and Lynda (Steve) Comer, Osgood; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Dr. Robert Gibson, and many nieces and nephews.. In addition to her husband, Lucylle was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, UvaLee Woods; and her brother, Dr. James Gibson.. Visitation is Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1-4 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home. The funeral service is Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Huntersville, with the Revs. Dennis and Linda Frische-Mouri officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John’s cemetery. Memorials may be made in her memory to St. John United Church of Christ Memorial Fund or Margaret Mary Health Foundation Hospice Fund in care of the funeral home.
