Text size

Betty L. Holtel, 88, Oldenburg, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, at her residence.
Born Nov. 5, 1928, in Cranberry Prairie, Ohio, she was the daughter of Frances (Buehler) and William Kaiser. She married Larry Holtel April 22, 1950, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Oldenburg.
Betty was the assistant postmaster at the Oldenburg post office for 20 years before retiring May 1, 1995. She was also a member of Holy Family Church, Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, the Oldenburg Knights of St. John Ladies Auxiliary and a 30- year member of the Eagle Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.
Betty had many hobbies, which included cross-stitch quilting, Scrabble, word searches, crossword puzzles and playing 500. She was a voracious reader and liked watching Game Show Network as well. A long-standing tradition she and Larry enjoyed were Monday night visits from Elmer Siefert to enjoy some homemade wine and watch "Antiques Roadshow." An excellent cook and baker, her family will miss Betty's fried chicken and German potato salad as well as her cookies and angel food cake. A people person, Betty loved her years at the post office and being able to visit with everyone.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Mary Jo Beck and Nancy Marticke, Batesville, and Karen Pratt, Osgood; son Robert Holtel, Oldenburg; daughter-in-law Sally Holtel, Cincinnati; nine grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; five great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Glen Holtel, sisters Rita McGreevy and Irene Treon and brothers Victor, Carl, Luke and Cyril "Rex" Kaiser.
Visitation is Thursday, Dec. 8, from 4-7 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Holy Family Church with the Rev. David Kobak officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the Holy Family Capital Improvement Fund or Safe Passage.
