Nelson's Story

Nelson Merle Haessig Sr., Milan, was born Jan. 16, 1945, in Milan, the son of Loren H. and Alma Roberts Haessig.
He married Patricia Youngman at St. Maurice Catholic Church, Napoleon, May 21, 1966, and she survives. Nelson served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army. He grew up in the family grocery business - Haessig's Market at Negangard's Corner and later co-owned it with his brother, Robert. Nelson could always be found at the store, and upon his retirement, Haessig's Market had served the community for almost 80 years. He also enjoyed helping family and friends, spending time with his family and grilling out. On Thursday, March 16, at the age of 72, Nelson passed away at his residence.
Those surviving who will honor Nelson's memory include his loving wife of over 50 years, Patricia Haessig; children, Nelson (Clara) Haessig Jr., Milan, Robert (Rebecca) Haessig, Sunman, Tonya (John) Alford, Milan, and Douglas (Megan) Haessig, Avon, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Haessig, Milan.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph John Haessig; and brothers, Robert L. Haessig and Roger Haessig.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, March 21, from 4-8 p.m. with rosary at 3:15 at Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home, Sunman. A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Father Shaun Whittington will be Wednesday, March 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Sunman. Burial with military honors provided by the Kenneth L. Diver American Legion Post 337, Sunman, will follow in St. Paul Cemetery, Sunman.
