Lauragene (Cutter) Filsell, 74, Versailles, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2016, at The Waters of Batesville.
The daughter of Clarence Robert and Aldean Irene (Cleeter) Cutter was born Jan. 29, 1942, in Milan. She was raised in Fairview and later moved to Abingdon, Virginia, where she attended high school through her junior year. Lauragene moved back to Switzerland County, where she was a 1960 graduate of Vevay High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in education in 1964 from Hanover College.
Lauragene was united in marriage July 10, 1965, in Evansville to Donald Ray Wittmer and to this union arrived two daughters, Laura and Laurene, to bless their home. She earned her master's degree in education in 1966 from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Lauragene was later united in marriage Sept. 22, 1984, at Clifty Falls State Park, Madison, to Bruce Edward Filsell. Lauragene and Bruce shared nearly 31 years of marriage together until he passed away Feb. 22, 2015.
Lauragene was a former teacher at Lawrenceburg High School and South Ripley High School, where she taught English and Spanish, retiring in 1971. Lauragene was a member of Versailles Baptist Church. She resided the past 50 years in the Versailles community. Lauragene enjoyed spending time with her grandsons and will be remembered for her love of sewing, cooking and working crossword puzzles.
She is survived by daughters Laura (Paul) Freese, Batesville, and Laurene Wittmer, North Vernon; grandsons Justin Wittmer and Levi and Eli Freese; stepgrandsons Eric and Kyle Freese; brothers Arlen Cutter and Denzil Cutter, Fairview, and Dean Cutter, Versailles; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands.
Visitation is Tuesday, July 19, from 5-8 p.m. and the funeral officiated by the Rev. Dick Burcham is Wednesday, July 20, at 11 a.m. at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry St., Vevay. Interment is in Vevay Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
