Harriet Bouchillon

Harriet L. Bouchillon passed away at age 73 on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, in El Cajon, California. Harriet was born March 24, 1946, to Howard and Sarah Cook and grew up in the small town of Sunman, Indiana.
Harriet started singing in public at age 3 and continued into her 70s. In high school, she was valedictorian, played the oboe in band, was editor of the yearbook, was a cheerleader and was involved in 4-H and choir. Harriet received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Wheaton College in Illinois, where she participated in Women's Glee and a traveling vocal quartet. In her 60s, she obtained a master's degree in Biblical studies from Southern California Seminary.
Harriet's life was marked by faithful Christian service. At age 10, Harriet accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and later developed a heart for cross-cultural missions. After college, Harriet married Jim in 1968, and they moved to Plano, Texas, where she taught school while Jim attended seminary. In 1972, Jim and Harriet began their missionary career with Camino Global (formerly CAM International) and moved to Costa Rica to study Spanish. They spent their lifetime in church planting and various other ministry efforts in Spain (Madrid and Logrono), Mexico (Puebla and Guadalajara) and California (El Cajon and Santee).
Following Jim's death in 2012, she continued to speak across the world at various women's events and layperson training events, to lead women's Bible studies, counsel other missionaries, organize children's and women's ministries and enjoy her family and the many friendships developed around the world - while battling cancer with joy and grace.
All who knew Harriet in her various ministry capacities remember her for her beautiful singing voice, her warm personality and her wise teaching. She felt blessed to travel the world alongside Jim and her three children telling people of God's love.
Harriet's parents, husband and brother, Roger, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her brother, David Cook; sister-in-law Barbara Cook; daughter Suzanne and husband Justin; son Steve; son Phil and wife Rebecca; and seven grandchildren.

I was three years younger than Harriet, and, by the time I reached my Freshman year in school, she had already graduated. I remember listening to Harriet sing in church, and in the school chorus especially when we participated in the Christmas programs. I remember Harriet as selfless, giving, and kind. As she is now in Christ's loving arms, I'm sure He has found a place for her to sing His praises.
