Dorothy Ann Louise (Smith) Bush, Stuart, Florida, died Saturday, March 19, 2016, at the age of 80.
Dottie, as she was called by many, was born Aug. 21, 1935, and grew up in Cincinnati. She graduated from Our Lady of Angels High School. After graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper at First National Bank. She moved to Sunman a few years after marrying Robert Bush, a widower with two young girls, in May 1962. Together, they had a set of twin boys and one more girl. Dottie worked hard, learned to cook, raised her own fruits and vegetables and then preserved them. She was a wonderful wife and mother.
After Dottie and Robert divorced, she worked a full-time job at Hill-Rom, Batesville. Dottie was a union steward with United Steelworkers of America Local 525. She also had part-time jobs, which included Sunman Package Store and Weisberg Tavern. The only day she took off from work was Sunday and that was dedicated to family, taking care of her asparagus and raspberry patches and her grandchildren.
When Dottie retired, she moved to Stuart, Florida, following her good friend Shirley Sneed. They took many trips to Las Vegas together. She made many new friends and helped write the newsletter for Leisure Village, the retirement community in which she lived. Dottie loved to play cards with all of her friends and family. She volunteered helping others around her wherever she was needed and also through hospice.
Her family and her friends mattered most to Dottie. She would often do without in order to provide for her children and she did so with a gracious heart. We are all so blessed to have had her in our lives.
Dottie is survived by five children through the marriage of Robert Lee Bush: sons Mark Bush and Matthew Bush; daughter Lori Ann Freese; stepdaughters Karla Cruz and Robin Madonna. Dottie is survived by one brother, Lawrence Smith.
She was graced with seven grandchildren: grandsons Brandon Buckhave and Kyle Bush and granddaughters Lauren Horton, Michelle Hart, Rachel Bush and Katrina Bush. Even more blessings came with six great-grandchildren: Brady, Baylee, Alexis, Jaxson, Isabella and Lyla.
Dottie had 10 nieces and nephews, 13 great-nieces and -nephews, and 16 great-great-nieces and -nephews.
She was preceded in death by father John Carl Smith, mother Ethel Wiehe Smith, brother Ronald Richard Smith, sister-in-law Carolyn Ann Dant Smith and granddaughter Tiffany Nicole Buckhave.
A memorial ceremony for friends and family will be Saturday, April 23, from 1-4 p.m. at 7517 E. County Road 500 N., Milan. For further information, contact lfreese65@gmail.com.
